10 things to do in SE1

02 May 2011 | OneGTM

OneGTM have been spoilt for choice over the past few years down in SE1. We’re privy to all the little hidden secrets that Bermondsey has on offer, but we feel that the time has come when it’s only fair to share the love. So we’ve put together our list of favourite places for grabbing a bite, a drink or some free Shakespeare… All will be revealed…

Grub

El Vergel
132 Webber Street, SE1 0QL
Only the locals know about this wonderful sandwich shop/restaurant. Try the steak and guacamole sandwich, and you’ll be going back for more (they also do deliveries so bear them in mind for office meetings).

Fine Foods
218 Long Lane, SE1 4BQ
A favourite of OneGTM, this authentic Italian deli serves up the best sandwiches in South London (eat in or take away). They’ll make it in front of you and then bid your farewell with an enthusiastic ‘grazie milione!’.

The Garrison
99 Bermondsey Street, SE1 3XB
Towards Tower Bridge (about a 10 minute walk), situated on the vibrant Bermondsey Street, the Garrison is a fantastic restaurant and bar (I wish this was my local at home). Book ahead as it does get busy. This is just around the corner from our office, so you can pop in and say hello.

Hiba Maya House
134-138 Borough High Street
The best restaurant on Borough High Street. Great Lebanese food.

Wright Brothers
11 Stoney Street, SE1 9AD
If you like fish then this is the best restaurant in Borough Market (without a doubt). If you like meat, try Roast or the Gaucho but I would always opt for Wright Brothers.

Pubs

Boot and Flogger
10-20 Redcross Way, SE1 1TA
A true hidden gem, situated on Redcross Way opposite the sacred burial ground of the working girls of London. Watch out when you go, as you may bump into mourners (you’ll see what I mean when you go there). When you walk through the door, you could be walking back in time to a scene in a Charles Dickens novel. Closes at 8pm but usually by then you’ve drunk more than enough wine.

The Clyde
27 Clennam Street, SE1 1ER
Tucked down a little alley way, this is a traditional pub serving a fine selection of real ales. Great when you want a ‘traditional’ pint away from the crowds of Borough High Street. It’s also a good place to watch the football.

Southwark Tavern
Borough Market, SE1 1TU
A vibrant and lively pub at the entrance to Borough Market. Go there on a Tuesday night and you might find OneGTM team competing in their great pub quiz. We’ve got a title to defend!

The Swan Bar
21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, SE1 9DT
With amazing views of St Paul’s, this bar is quite often overlooked by punters. As a result you get a great table in a unique location. About 10 minute walk towards Tate Modern.

Village East
131 Bermondsey Street, SE1 3UW
For the younger and more fashion conscious staff, this New York style bar is a great place for a cocktail or a sophisticated lunch.

Entertainment

Menier Chocolate Factory
53 Southwark Street, SE1 1RU
This renovated chocolate factory makes for a unique venue and has some great productions – you have Ruby Wax and Tom Conti performing on your doorstep.

The Scoop at More London
More London, SE1 2DB
The Scoop at More London is an outdoor sunken amphitheatre. In the summer it regularly hosts a variety of free events – including films, music and Shakespeare.

We hope you enjoy exploring and maybe we’ll see you round!
