Christmas Day Trip to Lille

15 December 2016 | Phil Brown

After a successful Christmas trip to Brussels last year, this year’s Christmas trip took OneGTM to a historic city in the north of France – Lille.

Despite a stressful start at St Pancras, which involved two of the team almost missing the train, we made it in time to Lille for our planned food tour, starting at one of the city’s finest restaurants – le Barbue d’Anvers.

While being served a generous portion of Lille’s traditional beef & chips, which was very popular among the team, our tour guide proceeded to tell us all about the city’s history and how the influence of their Flemish neighbours has left an impact on both Lille’s culture & cuisine.

Fun fact: In 2005, former president Nicolas Sarkozy celebrated his 50th birthday at le Barbue d’Anvers!

From le Barbue d’Anvers, we proceeded to explore further parts of Lille and its cuisine, ending up at an exclusive beer and cheese tasting which was greatly enjoyed by everyone!

The rest of the day was then spent getting into the festive spirit by drinking mulled wine, exploring Lille’s very own winter wonderland full of little Christmas markets, and braving a ride on the market’s Ferris wheel!

All in all, it was a memorable Christmas trip to a bustling city worth visiting – not least for its delicious cuisine!
